Background of the Study
Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) refers to the integration of environmental, social, and economic considerations into the entire supply chain process, from raw material sourcing to final product delivery. As businesses are increasingly held accountable for their environmental and social impacts, adopting sustainable practices within the supply chain has become essential. Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading cement manufacturer in Nigeria, has made significant strides in embedding sustainability within its operations. The company is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint while promoting social welfare and economic development.
Kwara State, located in the central region of Nigeria, serves as one of Lafarge's key operational hubs. The company has adopted various sustainable supply chain strategies, including eco-friendly sourcing of raw materials, energy-efficient manufacturing processes, and waste reduction measures. Lafarge’s commitment to sustainability aligns with global trends, as many companies are now striving to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Okafor, 2023). However, challenges such as limited access to renewable energy sources, high transportation costs, and inconsistent government policies have hindered the full implementation of sustainable practices in Lafarge’s supply chain in Kwara State.
Previous studies indicate that the integration of sustainable practices in supply chain management can significantly improve operational efficiency and brand image, but companies often face difficulties in balancing sustainability with cost-efficiency (Johnson et al., 2024). As such, it is critical to assess the current practices at Lafarge Africa Plc in Kwara State to understand how well they align with sustainability goals and what improvements can be made.
Statement of the Problem
Although Lafarge Africa Plc has taken steps toward integrating sustainability into its supply chain operations, there are gaps in understanding how these practices are being effectively implemented and their impact on the company’s overall performance. In Kwara State, factors such as infrastructural challenges, limited access to sustainable technologies, and regulatory inconsistencies may affect the ability of Lafarge to achieve its sustainability targets. Furthermore, there is insufficient research on the specific challenges and opportunities faced by Lafarge in Kwara State in implementing sustainable supply chain practices.
The problem lies in the difficulty of measuring and improving sustainable practices while ensuring operational efficiency and maintaining profitability. The need for a comprehensive appraisal of Lafarge's sustainable supply chain practices in Kwara State is essential to identify areas for improvement and to ensure the company's long-term sustainability objectives are met.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the sustainable supply chain management practices implemented by Lafarge Africa Plc in Kwara State.
2. To evaluate the challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of sustainable supply chain practices in Lafarge Africa Plc, Kwara State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the sustainability of supply chain management practices in Lafarge Africa Plc.
Research Questions
1. What sustainable supply chain management practices are implemented by Lafarge Africa Plc in Kwara State?
2. What challenges does Lafarge Africa Plc face in implementing sustainable supply chain practices in Kwara State?
3. What strategies can Lafarge Africa Plc adopt to enhance the sustainability of its supply chain in Kwara State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant relationship between the sustainable supply chain practices implemented by Lafarge Africa Plc and its operational performance in Kwara State.
2. Infrastructural challenges in Kwara State negatively affect the successful implementation of sustainable supply chain practices at Lafarge Africa Plc.
3. Adoption of advanced sustainable technologies will improve the supply chain efficiency and sustainability of Lafarge Africa Plc in Kwara State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on assessing the sustainable supply chain management practices of Lafarge Africa Plc in Kwara State. The research aims to evaluate the current sustainability initiatives, challenges, and strategies for improvement within the context of the state.
The limitations of the study include the potential unavailability of specific data related to Lafarge’s internal supply chain processes, as some information may be confidential. Additionally, the study may face time constraints in accessing relevant data and conducting interviews with key stakeholders within Lafarge Africa Plc.
